Birdsville and surrounding communities are now left without phones from Xmas eve! Mobiles loose service once you drive a measly 10 km out of town, in an area where "neighbour" properties can be 100's ok kilometres apart!

UPDATE: Outage going into its FIFTH straight day now, just another case where Telstra shows its turned its collective back on poor old regional customers (Queensland for starters)!!

From ABC news

Landline Telephone services have been Cut to outback Qld

The federal member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott, says the phones went out on Christmas Day - and he says it is a disgrace in this day and age.

"The landline connection from Birdsville to Windorah is out since Christmas Eve."

He says this is presenting problems, because all EFTPOS services are out, people can't contact their loved ones and it is presenting problems for staff at the Birdsville Hospital.

"In an emergency you need to be able to contact the clinic and the outside world and they haven't been able to do it."

Mr Scott says the fault highlights the second-rate service people in the country are getting while the NBN is delivering high speed broadband to many in the capital cities.

Just after we spoke to Mr Scott he rang back, saying Telstra Countrywide had contacted him and they are getting technical teams out as soon as possible to find and fix the fault.

Get your act together and fix this VITAL service (for many means life or death in an emergency scenario) IMMEDIATELY
